Day 169 - Garden Salad

Day 169 - Garden Salad, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Another light lunch at work, though I'm sure the amount of thousand island dressing undoes some of the benefit of eating salad!

Day 168 - Homemade Chicken Curry

Day 168 - Homemade Chicken Curry, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Homemade curry for dinner on Sunday night. This was actually the second night that the curry made an appearance and, as is often the case, after a bit of extra marinating the curry was even better!

Congee Creams Comeptition

Day 157 - Congee

I wonder how long I can continue to come up with kitchy, poor-taste titles? What isn't unknown, however, is that Day 157, the chicken congee, took out last weeks competition, edging out Saturday's seafood.

As per before, because I'm late putting the poll up, I've extended the voting deadline till mid-night (HK-time) Saturday night. So it's time to go get your vote on! Quite a few good looking photos this week, if I do say so myself!

Day 167 - McDonald's Big Breakfast

Not bad per se, but somehow even the McDonald's pepper is de-flavoured, with this much pepper barely providing any extra taste. Good thing I added tomato sauce as well!

Day 166 - Char Siu Fan

Day 166 - Char Siu Fan, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

After climbing today, I headed to the Cha Chaan Teng (HK Style Cafe) to order Char Siu Fan (Chinese BBQ Pork and Rice) and Dong Yuen Yeung (Iced Coffee-Tea Mix) but today, unusually, got a free Chinese Soup as well.

Sik Fan, Yum Tong!~

Day 165 - Garden Salad with Thousand Island Dressing and an Onion Ciabatta

Just a light lunch today. The garden salad was mostly lettuce, but I like lettuce; the thousand island dressing would have been better as mayonnaise; and the ciabatta wasn't really chewy enough for my tastes, but overall quite good and quite filling.

Day 164 - Filled Omelette

Day 164 - Filled Omelette, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

For dinner tonight we each had individual Omelettes filled with tomato and bacon rice. Quite good, but a dash of tomato sauce made it.

Day 163 - Winter Melon Soup

Day 163 - Winter Melon Soup, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Yum Cha for lunch and instead of one of the normal vegetable dishes that we order, we decided to go for the Winter Melon Soup. This is served by scooping out the soft melon flesh along with the soup. It was quite good but perhaps too big, with everything else considered, for only 6 of us!

Day 162 - Pork Chop Hotplate

Day 162 - Pork Chop Hotplate, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

This dish is simply fantastic.

They bring out a little butane jet and hotplate and set it on your table. When the sauce in the bottom of the plate is starts to boil, you crack an egg, mix it a little and pour it over the dish. Just as the egg starts to cook you serve it. The egg and onion are soft and delicious, the Pork Chops pieces are tender on the inside and still crunchy on the outside... It's simply mouth-watering!

Day 161 - Egg Tarts

Day 161 - Egg Tarts, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Egg tarts are very popular in Hong Kong. I originally thought they were imported from Macau, where they were imported from Portugal (Macau being an ex-Portuguese colony), but Wikipedia tells me they may also have evolved from English custard tarts. No matter their history, they are rich, delicious and now, certainly part of Hong Kong culture.

Fresh Baked Blueberry Muffins Roast Competition

Day 153 - Fresh Baked Blueberry Muffins

The Fresh Baked Muffins (Day 153) easily came out on top last week, beating the rest of the competition combined. The new poll is up and ready when you are. Vote on!

Day 160 - Homecooked Seafood

Day 160 - Homecooked Seafood, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Seafood at home! Chilli Clams, Whole Steamed Fish and Egg Coated Prawns. Yum!

Also pictured is Garlic Broccoli, Mince Pork, Choi and Soy Chicken.

Sik Fan!~

Day 159 - Curry Pork Chop Rice

Day 159 - Curry Pork Chop Rice, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Just a quick meal at my desk after a bit of climbing. The rice is in there... Hidden under my requested "lots and lots" of sauce!

Day 158 - Greek Salad Pita

Day 158 - Greek Salad Pita, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

This was actually labelled a Middle Eastern Salad but let's see: Cucumber, Tomato, Black Olives and Feta Cheese? Sounds more like a Greek Salad to me!

Tasted pretty good but I was still a tad hungry afterwards.

Day 157 - Congee

Day 157 - Congee, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

A Chinese staple, Congee or Tzuk is rice that has been boiled until it becomes a sort of porridge. It normally contains standard ingredients such as peanuts and spring onion with a choice of meat (this one is the Chicken variation). Best of all, it is often served with a mouthwatering stick (or two!) of fried bread.

Sik Tzuk!~

Day 156 - Soup Noodles with San Choi, Turnip and Beefballs

This is a choose-your-own-flavour type lunch meal. You pick the type of noodles you want and three ingredients from a long list. I was considering the wanton, but the garlicy and black-peppery beefballs swayed me.

Sik Mein!

Day 155 - Ham, Lettuce & Tomato Sandwich

Another sandwich for lunch, this time I went with the ham version. For me, this was slightly better than the roast chicken.

Strangely, they only offered me mayonnaise for this. I would have preferred mustard, but a slice of cheese would have beaten both. Next time, I'll remember to ask!

Day 154 - White Rice and Thai Green Curry

More than 150 days now and I don't think I've had a single photo that shows the stable of my diet: plain white rice. It's good but it's better with a little Thai Green Curry!

Day 153 - Fresh Baked Blueberry Muffins

This were still warm out of the oven and delicious and moist in the middle. Yum!

Roast Chicken Sandwich puts the squeeze on the voters!

Day 142 - Roast Chicken Sandwich

In a surprise to me, Day 142 - Roast Chicken Sandwich has walked away with this week's extended voting. It did taste good, but I didn't think it had enough photographic taste to carry it over the line. Shows what I know!

Let's Eat!~

With Bak Choi, Chinese Sausage, Fishball and Prawns

Day 151 - Chicken Caesar Salad

Day 151 - Chicken Caesar Salad, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Just a quick lunch at my desk today as I was a little late after my lunchtime run.

Overall quite good but could have done with more cherry tomatoes.

Day 150 - Sandwich in a Bowl

Day 150 - Sandwich in a Bowl, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Day 150! I originally wanted to go for a B&W shot here, but despite the high contrast of the Sandwich in a Bowl the image just didn't work. So instead, I went for a few tweaked curves.

This is the tuna variation of Sandwich in a Bowl. Very tasty, but I think the amount of dressing somewhat undoes that healthy feeling that I get from having a salad for lunch!

Let's Eat!~

PS. I'll post the B&W shot that I was originally going for in the flickr comments. Head here to see it.

Day 149 - Tofu and Fishmeat Snacks

It doesn't sound that delicious but these are great. Ground fishmeat and tofu sandwiched together and deep fried. We also had a version that substitutes the tofu with capsicum. Also delicious!

Steamed fish and Broccoli in the background.

Day 148 - Take-Away Curry Chicken Rice

Once again, I opted for the safe but delicious Curry Chicken Rice for lunch. Eating at my desk today because I spent the first half of my lunch-break climbing!

Day 147 - Delivered Pizza

Day 147 - Delivered Pizza, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Seeing as it was Father's Day in HK on Sunday we had to wait more than an hour and a half for our two pizzas to be delivered!

This is a "Mediterranean" pizza. Somehow that involves corn but no salami? Pazzo!

Char Siu Fan Grills Competition

A very clear out-right winner last week! Char Siu Fan ran away with the contest with a total of 8 votes.

Day 136 - Char Siu Fan

Due to my lateness in posting the new poll, voting will be open an extra day: till midnight on Saturday. Vote away!

Day 146 - Pan-fried War-tip

Day 146 - Pan-fried War-tip, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Delicious and crispy on the outside.

Day 145 - Chicken Tikka

Day 145 - Chicken Tikka, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Quite good and a little spicy but quite a big lunch considering I'm trying to diet!

Day 144 - Teriyaki Chicken with Cold Noodles in Sesame Sauce

In fact, the description that accompanied this dish was "cool noodles", which I originally thought was either the colloquial meaning or the specific type of noodles used. I was a little surprised that the noodles were cold, until I realised what they meant by "cool noodles"!

Still very good with just enough sauce to coat the noodles without over-powering the sweetness of the Teriyaki.

Wednesday, 17 June 2009

Day 143 - Spaghetti with Bacon and Mushrooms

Another spaghetti dish this week, but this time home-cooked. Very garlicky but quite good.

Day 142 - Roast Chicken Sandwich

Day 142 - Roast Chicken Sandwich, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Some semi-sundried tomatoes would have really made it, but they're hard to find and quite expensive in Hong Kong. It was pretty good anyway.

Day 141 - Spaghetti Carbonara

Day 141 - Spaghetti Carbonara, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

at Amaroni's Little Italy in Festival Walk. A (just about literally) "table-sized" Margarita Pizza in the foreground here.

Portions in this restaurant are completely over the top: two of us unable to get more than half-way through 2 mains and a shared starter. Not really the best idea to go with only two people... it's a pity I like the food and atmosphere so much!

Day 140 - Family Dinner

Day 140 - Family Dinner, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

A fairly standard dinner tonight with vegetarian, meat and vegetable dishes.

Weekly Photo Contest a tie... again!

Day 129 - Pork Chop with Curry Rice & Day 131 - Tempura Prawns

Who would have guessed? Another tie! Well, at least, I'd personally pick these as not bad photos: Day 129 - Pork Chop with Curry Rice and Day 131 - Tempura Prawns.

Day 139 - Club Sandwich

Day 139 - Club Sandwich, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Lunch today at Orchid Garden Restaurant in Causeway Bay. The place had a really nice atmosphere and decor but the food was definitely not quite up to scratch!

Day 138 - Cornflakes and Banana

Day 138 - Cornflakes and Banana, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

I'm a big cereal advocate. I love it. Perhaps not as much as Jerry Seinfeld, but it's the way I always prefer to start my day.

Day 137 - Dinner Smorgasbord

Day 137 - Dinner Smorgasbord, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

So many great dishes in one meal, it's impossible to diet! Thai Green Curry, Chips (which by the way were delicious dipped in the curry!), Fried Noodles with Ham, Roast Chicken, Vegetables, Shredded Pork with Preserved Mustard Green and Baked Ham.

Day 136 - Char Siu Fan

Day 136 - Char Siu Fan, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

I decided on something safe and delicious for lunch. Also, I'm working on not making all my photos look so homogeneous!

Wednesday, 10 June 2009

Day 135 - Braised Chicken with Spicy Sauce on Rice

Despite the Szechuan type sauce, this dish wasn't all that spicy and was smaller than I would have liked... I was still a bit hungry afterwards!

Monday, 8 June 2009

Day 134 - Sandwich in a Bowl

Day 134 - Sandwich in a Bowl, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

A rather entertaining idea, but as you can see the proportions of bread to lettuce wasn't that of a typical sandwich. Good thing I like lettuce so much!

Day 133 - Garbanzos Con Chorizo

Day 133 - Garbanzos Con Chorizo, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Dinner at Ricos in SoHo was quite good. This was the tapas dish that I ordered, but everyone shared, so I got to try a lot of different things. Nothing really stood out for me, but certainly nothing was bad either.

Vamos a Comer!

Sunday Sundae Steals Show!

Day 119 - McDonald's Double Sundae

Yes-sir-ee, the McDonald's Sundae (Day 119) won last week's voting! If you're not a fan of McDonald's (and I know many of you aren't), I recommend you get in and vote for what you do like!

Saturday, 6 June 2009

Day 132 - Chicken Burritos

Day 132 - Chicken Burritos, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

Family dinner at home. Also served with Tomato Risotto and Carbonara.

Day 131 - Tempura Prawns

Day 131 - Tempura Prawns, originally uploaded by JoeGray.

A great dinner at Watami Japanese Restaurant at APM. We also had the Seafood Rice Au Gratin, Okonomiyaki, Pork Chop Salad and Seafood Pizza. Delicious!

Thursday, 4 June 2009

Day 130 - Home-cooked Pork War-Tip

Add a little chilli-soy to these dumplings and you've got a winner!

Day 129 - Pork Chop with Curry Rice

Instead of the normal Japanese style curry this was more similar to an Indian style and was also slightly spicy, which I was pleasantly surprised with. A lot of Hong Kongers don't like spicy food, so often dishes like this are very mild.

Tuesday, 2 June 2009

Day 128 - Fried Curry Rice with Chicken

A huge serving size... just what I needed after my lunchtime run.

This was advertised as "Japanese", but somehow the peanuts and sultanas mixed in didn't seem that Japanese. They did seem delicious however.

Day 127 - Yum Cha
